July 11th saw my family and I heading out to Granby, Colorado to combine a summer vacation with a chance to compete in the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Cross Country race.
We spent the first night in Aurora at a family friends house and after getting to sleep around 2 am, we headed out on the 2 hour drive to Winter Park. Iron Horse Resort adjacent to Winter Park would be our home away from home for the next 10 days. Winter park and the surrounding areas offer many outdoor activities. The ladies took several horseback trips from the YMCA of the Rockies. Greta takes lessons locally at the Blue Mountain Pony Club in Newville. We also frequented the Winter Park Resort downtown area for food and entertainment.
The riding was superb in the area with the highlights being a road ride to 11,300ft over Berthoud, a mtb ride to the North Cone at 12,600ft and a trail maze ride outside of Fraser. During our trip we saw lots of wildlife including deer, elk, coyotes, bear, marmots, snowshoe hares and mountain lion tracks in the snow at 12,00ft.
The bike racing was held at the Solvista Bike Park on Granby Ranch Resort in beautiful Granby, Co. Several local riders competed in different events including Cross Country, Short Track and Super D, with some placing very well. Mountainside Racing Team Leader Mike Laub placed 5th in his class in Saturday’s XC Race. My race did not go as planned, but I survived the elevation effect and completed the race.
The Winter Park area makes a great summer vacation spot for the outdoors enthusiast.
