Race Report: Fair Hill, April 13

The weather cooperated with the promoters for the shine only race in Fair Hill, MD. It was partly sunny with the temperature in the mid-50s and the tacky trail conditions from the previous day’s rain made for excellent racing conditions. This year the race was scheduled earlier in the season and was a lap course instead of the single large loop of previous years. For the Elite and Expert categories the course was 3 laps of 7.2 miles/lap of screaming fast double and single track. The Open Elite field was huge with 39 starters as were all of the expert classes.

Racing for Mountainside in the Open Elite were Andy Hoover, Martin Kell, and Mike Laub, in the Elite Women, Sarah Lichtenwalner and Mike Funk in the Expert Master I category. Martin was riding the strongest in the Open Elite until a loose saddle forced him to ride the last lap and a half standing up. Luck wasn’t on Mike Funk’s side either as he was seen walking back to the parking lot for a new wheel not even a lap into the race. Sarah had a good finish in a very strong Elite Women’s field.
